What's up, Nesters!

The start of a new year is often filled with a sense of hope and renewal, a time for reflection and setting fresh intentions. For many, the beginning of the year signals an opportunity to reassess goals and dive into personal projects. As a mom, I’ve learned that balancing family responsibilities with personal ambitions can be both a challenge and a blessing. For me, writing has been one of the most rewarding ways to navigate this balance. Here’s my take on writing goals for the new year from a mom’s perspective—combining ambition with the reality of life at home.

1. Setting Realistic Writing Goals

As a mom, it’s essential to approach writing goals with a dose of realism. I’ve learned that setting myself up for success means breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Instead of vowing to write a novel in one year, I focus on writing a set number of words or completing one chapter at a time. For example, my goal might be to write 500 words every day or finish the outline for my next memoir by March. These smaller goals not only feel more achievable, but they also help me stay motivated as I check off each milestone.

2. Carving Out Time for Writing

One of the biggest challenges for a mom who loves to write is finding the time to sit down and focus. Between school runs, meal prep, and household chores, it can feel nearly impossible to carve out uninterrupted writing time. Over the years, I’ve learned that finding pockets of time throughout the day can make all the difference. Whether it’s waking up an hour earlier, writing during nap time, or even sneaking in a few paragraphs after bedtime, every little bit adds up. My goal for the new year is to establish a consistent writing routine that works around my family’s needs, ensuring I don’t compromise on my passion.

3. Embracing Flexibility

The life of a mom is unpredictable, and sometimes the best-laid plans go awry. A child might get sick, an unexpected event pops up, or family responsibilities require immediate attention. In these moments, flexibility is key. I’ve come to accept that some days will be more productive than others, and that’s okay. If I miss a writing session, I adjust my schedule for the next day, but I don’t allow myself to get discouraged. Writing is a long-term commitment, and progress comes in fits and starts. Embracing this ebb and flow is vital for maintaining motivation.

4. Incorporating Writing into Daily Life

For moms, time management is crucial, and finding ways to incorporate writing into daily life helps make the most of limited time. For instance, I might jot down notes or ideas while waiting in the carpool line, or I’ll dictate my thoughts into a voice memo while on a walk with the kids. These snippets of writing can be just as valuable as sitting down at a desk, and they often spark new ideas or refine existing ones. One of my goals this year is to make writing a part of my everyday routine, no matter how small the effort may seem.

5. Prioritizing Self-Care for Creativity

Writing, like any creative endeavor, requires energy and focus. As a mom, it’s easy to put yourself last on the list of priorities. But I’ve found that when I take care of myself—whether it’s through exercise, a quiet cup of tea, or reading a book for inspiration—I’m more likely to be productive in my writing. This year, my goal is to prioritize self-care not just for the sake of my well-being, but for the sake of my creativity. A rested and nurtured mom is more capable of tapping into her writing potential.

6. Celebrating Small Wins

As a mom, I’ve learned that sometimes the biggest achievements come in small packages. Whether it’s completing a chapter or simply finding five minutes to write, every victory is worth celebrating. It’s easy to get caught up in the long-term goals and forget to appreciate the small steps along the way. In the new year, I’m committing to acknowledging these small wins, as they are the building

blocks to bigger achievements.

7. Involving Family in My Writing Journey

One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a mom and a writer is sharing my creative journey with my family. Whether it’s reading a passage to my children or discussing my latest writing project with my partner, involving my family in my writing helps me stay motivated and connected to my purpose. This year, I aim to engage my kids in more creative activities, whether through storytelling or writing exercises, to show them the power of self-expression.

Writing as a Lifelong Journey

Writing as a mom is not always easy, but it’s an incredibly rewarding journey. The new year brings fresh opportunities to set goals, embrace flexibility, and continue pursuing our passions. By focusing on realistic goals, carving out time for writing, and celebrating each step along the way, I believe we can find success in our creative endeavors while balancing the demands of motherhood. Here’s to another year of writing, growth, and inspiration, no matter how busy life may get.
